A flexible circuit assembly, or touchpad, is most often described as a thin, low profile, front panel assembly. This front panel will generally require one layer of polyester, with screen printed conductors printed on the layer. The switch assembly utilizes pressure sensitive adhesives in the assembly to bond either the rubber keypad to the switch panel, or mount the electronic switch to a rigid substrate.

A graphic overlay most often is included on the flexible circuit assembly. The overlay provides the cosmetic appeal that is generally associated with a touchpad assembly.  The touchpad, or membrane switch, may also include tactile switches as part of the front panel assembly. Other options that may be offered are the addition of components such as connectors, LEDs, resistors or capacitors. 

A flexible circuits is a pliable counterpart to a rigid printed circuit board. Flexible circuits, or "flex circuits," are often required to enable a more rapid construction of a device rather than their ability to turn and twist in normal operation
